Vinsanity in Toronto Again!

The NBA playoffs will start this weekend with a match up that the Raptors and true fans didn’t want to see happen will.

On the last day of the season the New Jersey Nets destroyed the Chicago Bulls to clinch the sixth place seed in the Easter Conference playoffs.

Instead of the Raptors having to face a lowly Washington Wizards team without Gilbert Arenas, they will have to face a team that has Jason Kidd, Vince Carter, and Reggie Jefferson.

Vince Carter - New Jersey Nets (NBA)

Vince and the Nets have been on fire lately and are peaking at just the right time. The first game will be Saturday at 12:30pm in Toronto at the Air Canada Center. The media circus will be immense and once the game starts the booing of Vince Carter will be deafening. The impact that Carter has had on this organization cannot be understated. From the highs of 2 playoff runs and the publicity of the Slam Dunk contest to the lows of management interference and mailing it in so that he would be traded. The only player left from that trade is Joey Graham, who will be coming off the bench to guard Carter.

The curse of Vinsanity looms in every hallway, gate and seat of the ACC. Fans with number 15 on the back of their jerseys remind everyone about how much they looked up to the budding super star and how disappointed they are that the star fell so low. The only way to get rid of those bad memories and vanquish the VC demons is for the Raptors to beat the Nets in the first round and grab hold of Toronto’s new rising star Chris Bosh.

NBA Playoff Match-ups

Eastern Conference Western Conference
Detroit vs. Orlando Dallas vs. Golden State
Cleveland vs. Washington Phoenix vs. Los Angeles
Toronto vs. New Jersey San Antonio vs. Denver
Miami vs. Chicago Utah vs. Houston

I Blog because I Can

Well it looks like I’ve been tagged by Carl Pei. Carl wants me to give 5 reasons why I blog.

  1. I blog because I can
  2. I consider myself part of the first generation of the internet at the age of 32. Anyone I know 40yrs or older still make comments like “I hate the internet, I can never find anything I’m looking for.” Everyone who is younger than me knows everything there is to know about computers and the internet. I’m relatively new to blogging, I always figured no one would care what I had to say so why bother. Now that I’ve started this blog, and seemed to have had a good response, I’m really enjoying myself.

  1. My friend knows what he is doing
  2. A friend came to me and said he wanted to start a blog to apply some of his internet marketing knowledge and maybe make some money, but he didn’t have any content. I saw this as an opportunity to start a project and share my cottage building experiences with others. So far he’s done a great job. In only about 3 weeks technorati ranks us around 34,000.

  1. Share my cottage experiences
  2. It has taken a long time for me to actually find a cottage property that met my needs and was somewhat affordable. In that time frame there were a lot of hurdles and mistakes that I had to overcome. I figured there are probably a number of people out there wanting to do the same thing I’ve done, but aren’t sure how to go about doing it. This blog should help others and makes me feel good that I can help.

  1. Historical documentation
  2. Writing this blog and taking pictures, when I eventually start building the cottage, will ensure that this exciting time in my life is well documented. In the future I can look back at all I went through and the progression of the cottage as it was being built.

  1. Entrepreneurial spirit
  2. Even though I have no idea how much money this blog can make me it does interest me to run this blog like a business. I have started two unsuccessful internet companies in the past and feel like I will learn a lot about internet marketing by being a part of this project.

No Limit Texas Hold’em Poker Tournaments

No Limit Texas Hold’em Poker Tournaments

In the last 5 years the popularity of poker has exploded mainly because of the televised poker tournaments produced by the World Poker Tour.

The game that is being played in casinos, online poker sites, and homes is Texas Hold’em.

In addition to televised poker tournaments Texas Hold’em has taken off because it is actually a very easy game to learn.

Like Mike Sexton says “the game that takes a minute to learn but a lifetime to master”.

No Limit Texas Hold’em Poker

With the new found popularity of Texas Hold’em a lot of people are holding tournaments at home. However home tournaments can be a logistic nightmare if you don’t set the proper rules and stick to them, prior to the start of the tournament. Some of the common problems with home tournaments are:

  • Blind intervals are too long
  • No dealer button
  • Improper starting stack
  • Blind values are too low

When tournaments have these problems they can take forever and many people will lose interest. Especially when it get’s later into the night and people have had a few pops the tournament can come to a grinding halt. When this happens you have people going all-in on any hand just because they are tired and have lost interest. That is not the way to run a Texas Hold’em tournament.

Here are some tips to run a successful No Limit Texas Hold’em Tournament that will have your guests leaving your house happy even if they’ve lost.

Plan to play for about 4 hours

Of course this depends on how many people you have playing and what you plan on doing the rest of the night, but if there are 8 or more people and the focus is the poker tournament then 4 hours of play is a good time frame. Anything longer and people start losing interest. Anything shorter usually means that the blinds are too high compared to the chip stack and forces people to go all-in. It also leaves people wondering what they are going to do for the rest of the night.

Select a slightly aggressive blind schedule

Blind schedules that have long time intervals or don’t progress fast enough let players fold hand after hand. This isn’t bad in a casino tournament, but at home tournaments players are looking for action. They usually play lose cards and really don’t mind if they lose their money. They are just looking for a fun night. So keep the blind intervals to 15 or 20 minutes and keep the blind value moving up steadily.

Here is an example of a blind schedule if you were using 1000 chips to start.

1000 Chips
20 min levels = 3-4 hours

Use this as a basis for your game. You might only start with half the chips so reduce the blinds by half. Blind values should be relevant to the starting chip stack. A good rule of thumb is to make your starting blind 1/50th of the starting chip stack. I also like to introduce Antes once it gets down to the final six players. Antes increase the pot size and force players to get in the action.

Have a Dealer Button

This is a very simple thing to do, but having a dealer button let’s everyone know where the dealer is therefore they know who is the small and big blinds. All of this helps move the game along since no one has to ask “who’s deal is it?” and “is it my turn?”.

Have a break every hour

Players will be having a few pops and will need to get up from the table. A break every hour will keep the players fresh. It will let them refresh their drinks and get some food before sitting down for another hour.

Plan food before the tournament

Make arrangements to have food arrive or ready for the first or second break. Having some hot food and snacks will keep the late night hungers away and keep everyone happy. Having food at a tournament makes the players feel like they are being taken care of and leaves a good impression.

If you follow these tips and add some of your own touches to the tournament you will find yourself with a room full of happy poker players that can do nothing but talk about when how much fun they’ve had. Where else can you have a night out with your buddies, have a few drinks, dinner, and if you are lucky go home with a few extra bucks in your pocket.

20 Million Dollar Dream Cottage

If I had a million dollars…..Make that $20 million.

In light of our national lottery being $20 million I thought I would share with you what my dream cottage would look like.

To start out I would need a lot of land somewhere around 25 acres. I would build a main cottage, a guest cottage, a boathouse, and a brewery. Being true to the outdoors all the buildings would be in the log cabin style.

Mulit-Million Dollar Dream Cottage (Vacation Spot)

The main cottage would be open to the roof with a lofted upper level. There would be a large stone fireplace running from floor to the ceiling centered on the wall facing the water. On either side of the fireplace the walls would be large panes of glass to provide a gorgeous view of the lake. The kitchen would be large and open. Granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances would be main attractions. The dining room would have a long rectangular wood table that could seat 20 people. There would be a bar area with a large snooker table. I would have a nice selection of scotches, wines and cigars behind the bar, with a couple of microbrews on tap.

The guest cottage would be like a small house with 3 bedrooms, a full bathroom, kitchen and living room. A nice cast iron glass double door wood stove would heat the building. The grounds would have a Bocce Ball court and a Horseshoes court. Croquette would be setup as well as a sand Volleyball court. Outdoor speakers would be located at all the gathering areas so that music could be heard wherever you were.

Beautiful Balcony View of Vacation/Cottage Boat House

The boat house would have two doors, one for the bass boat and one for the ski boat. On the second level there would be a casual room with large windows to enjoy the view. In here you would be able to get out of the sun for a bit, grab something to eat and refresh your drink. A large wrap around deck would surround the room so that guests could sit outside in the sun by the water.

The final building is truly a dream building for me. The Brewery! I consider myself a connoisseur of beer. I love the history, the different styles, and the of course the taste of beer. In the brewery I would work on making the perfect wheat beer. There really isn’t anything much better then an ice cold wheat beer on a hot summer weekend by the lake.

So that’s what I would do if I won the lottery. It would be a dream come true and who knows maybe my 1 in 14million chance of winning that lottery will come through one day. Hopefully soon! What would you do?

This Weekend in Sports (13-Apr-2007)

NHL

The NHL playoffs go into their first weekend with some pretty amazing games having already been played.

Vancouver and Dallas went into quadruple overtime while San Jose and Nashville went into double overtime. The Sens spanked Sid the Kid and the Penguins so we’ll see if they can come back on Saturday, but I have a feeling this is finally Ottawa’s year.

Dany Heatley - Ottawa Senators (NHL)

Here are the match ups for this weekend:

Sat Apr 14, 2007

Rangers vs. Thrashers

Penguins vs. Senators

Lightning vs. Devils

Islanders vs. Sabres

Sun Apr 15, 2007

Flames vs. Red Wings

Senators vs. Penguins

Ducks vs. Wild

Canucks vs. Stars

NBA

LeBron James - Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA)

The NBA goes into it’s final weekend of the regular season and once again the Western Conference has shown to be the dominant conference. However the Eastern Conference has some of the best young stars of the NBA in Lebron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwight Howard. It looks like Detroit will claim top spot in the East. Positions 2,3,4,5 and 6 are all up for grabs with all of those teams wanting to play the Washington Wizards in the first round. Washington has lost Caron Butler to a broken hand and their All Star Gilbert Arenas to a sprained MCL. Arenas can win any close game with a buzzer beater from long distance. There isn’t a shot Gilbert doesn’t like. With the two of them out of the picture until next year the Wizards don’t stand a chance at even winning a game against the top teams in the east. With 2, 3, 4, 5 all within a couple of games of each other they will be playing hard to try and face Washington. The last 4 games of the season will be exciting.

MLB

Alex Rodriguez - New York Yankees (MLB)

The first week of the 2007 season is behind us and we find the Jays, Indians, and Angels on top of their divisions in the AL and Braves, Reds, and Diamondbacks in the NL. Atlanta must be pissed off for missing the playoffs last year and breaking their 14 straight division titles streak because this year the Braves have started the season 7 -1 to be tops in all of baseball. Another hot topic of the season is Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod was booed often last year in New York, mainly because of his fielding areas, but most considered last year a bad year for Alex at the plate too. Well with an option to get out of his contract this year A-Rod has torn up the 2007 season so far Batting .447, with 6 home runs and 16 RBI’s in only 8 games! Let’s see what happens the rest of the way. It’s a long season.

How to avoid confrontations with a Black Bear

If you were to come across the path of a bear in Ontario it would most likely be a Black Bear.

Black bears are attracted, by sense of smell to food and garbage.

When hungry they will follow their keen sense of smell right onto a cottage property to rummage through the garbage for a meal.

Here are some things the ministry of natural resources recommends doing around the cottage so that you aren’t surprised next time you open the cottage door.

  • Put garbage out the morning of the day garbage is collected if you have garbage collection at your cottage
  • Do not leave pet food outdoors
  • Clean the barbeque after using
  • Fill bird feeders only through the winter months
  • Do not put meat, fish, or fruit in your composter
  • Keep meat scraps in the freezer until garbage day
  • Pick all ripe fruit off trees and remove vegetables and fallen fruit from the ground
  • Use electric fencing to protect valuable trees, orchards, vegetable and berry patches

I have come across two black bears in my cottaging time once, at Pigeon Lake near Bobcaygeon. It wasn’t a full adult bear, but must have been hungry given it showed up middle of the day with 5 men on the lot making lots of noise. Together we threw are arms about and yelled. It turned around and ran back into the woods. The other time I was leaving Lake Salerno by Irondale. This guy was huge and standing in the middle of a dirt road. As we got closer in our car he sauntered off the road and slowly made his way into the woods.

I’m sure there are many people that have bear stories to tell. If you don’t want to be one of them heed the tips above.

The Portable Wood-Burning Hot Tub

The Portable Wood-Burning Hot Tub

I saw this item and I knew I had to share this with all of our readers. I would love to have this since it is portable, it is big enough for four adults and it uses wood to heat the water. With all the construction I’ll be doing at my lot this year I will have tons of wood to burn. Many people that are interested in owning a hot tub end up not buying one because of the electric heating costs. If you do have wood at your cottage or home then this would be a perfect product for you.

The tub holds 200 gallons of water and can be heated to 104 degrees in 2.5 hrs or less if the cover is on. The water is pushed through the metal coils which surround a wire basket where the firewood is housed. The basket can be raised or lowered to adjust the temperature of the water. There is also a ledge to hold drinks and other items. At a price of $5999.95 US it seems a little expensive, but really isn’t out of the price range of standard comparable hot tubs.

This Weekend in Sports (06-Apr-2007)

Major League Baseball

Well the boys of summer are back and this weekend we will be filled with games that essentially mean nothing with respect to the 162 game season, but are still fun to watch. You will find at the beginning of the baseball season many of the starting pitchers can’t go more then 6 innings and a lot of hitters that are tearing it up right now won’t even be remembered come October. However if you are a big MLB fan it is a great time of the year where all teams have a chance to win the World Series, like the Toronto Blue Jays, and optimism reigns supreme.

Here are some key match-ups this weekend:

Orioles vs. Yankees
Mets vs. Braves
Cardinals vs. Astros
Twins vs. White Sox
Athletics vs. Angels
Dodgers vs. Giants

PGA – The Masters

The Masters is on this weekend. 97 players are competing for the coveted Green Jacket at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. This has got to be the most anticipated and watched golf tournament of the year. People that have no idea what golf is about or who is even playing will enter in office pools for the Masters. This year, as is the case most years, everyone is picking Tiger Woods to win his 5th green jacket. Analysts aren’t even giving the others a shot at catching him. I heard one analyst say the only one that has a shot is Vijay Singh. Tiger’s American rival is Phil Mickelson and as of right now Phil has carded himself a 4 over 76. Not a very good start. Tiger Woods is at +1 right now and if this turns out to be like the other Master tournaments hanging around even par by Sunday will give him a shot at winning again. If you haven’t had a chance to watch golf in HD do so this weekend. Augusta is a gorgeous golf course and there will be tons of drama.

NHL

I really couldn’t go a week without mentioning hockey. Toronto is playing Montreal on Saturday which could determine who is in and who is out of the playoffs. I’ll be on the edge of my seat.

For our friend Ed Lau Vancouver has clinched a playoff spot, but still has to take care of some business with 3 games left to make sure Minnesota doesn’t steal the division lead from them. Most of the Western Conference is wrapped up except for 8th spot, but I don’t see Colorado taking that from Calgary.

See you next week and hopefully I’ll be talking about the Leafs opponent in the first round of playoffs.
