Garlic and Pepper Spaghettini Recipe

Garlic and Pepper Spaghettini

Here’s a fantastic recipe that is quick and easy. I got very tired of just putting tomato sauce on my pasta and found this recipe at the LCBO. It’s light and healthy and surprisingly tasty! Give it a try next time you are going to make pasta.

Garlic and Pepper Spaghettini
By: Jennifer McLagan

  • 1 head of garlic
  • 1 sweet red pepper
  • 2/3 to a whole hot red pepper, such as Serrano
  • ¼ cup (50 mL) olive oil
  • Salt
  • 7 oz (200 g) spaghettini
  • Freshly ground pepper
  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Meanwhile separate and peel the garlic cloves. Slice them thinly, then set aside. Seed, and then dice both of the peppers.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the oil; add the peppers and cook, stirring until the peppers have softened, about 5 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium-low and add the garlic. Cook the garlic, stirring for about 10 minutes or until the garlic caramelizes.
  3. Add a generous amount of salt to the boiling water, then cook the spaghettini until al dente. Drain and toss with pepper and garlic mixture, season and add a little more olive oil if necessary.

*Serves 2

56 Inch, 55 Pound Mammoth Pike Caught on Rainy Lake in Ontario

Here’s an email that has been passed around lately and I though I would share it with everyone since it is related to the sight.

The story goes that this fellow was out fishing on Rainy Lake in Ontario bordering Minnesota. He was fishing for Pike and had caught a 36 incher, a good catch by any standards, and as he was reeling it in this mammoth Pike tried to eat his catch! The fisherman grabbed his net and pulled both of the fish in the boat. The mammoth Pike was measured at 56 inches long and weighed 55 pounds which is apparently a new Canadian record. I can’t verify the authenticity of the story but here are the pictures that came along with it. Pretty darn impressive if you ask me.

Beer Crimes

Tragedy struck in Northern Ontario when a delivery truck filled with Grolsch beer swerved to miss a moose that had wandered onto the two land highway and lost 90% of its cargo.

It was about 7pm and the beer filled truck was heading north on the Trans Canada Highway to Thunder Bay when the accident occurred. The local police department released this statement

“Most animal related accidents occur in this area around dusk. The animals are unsure of the surroundings because of the poor lighting and travel from the east side of the highway to the west where there is a fresh supply of water. We are told from the truck driver, who will remain anonymous, that a large moose wandered onto the highway. The truck driver swerved into the oncoming traffic and then back into his lane narrowly missing the moose, but unfortunately lost most of the beer the truck was carrying.”

Grolsch Beer Accident on Road

Detective Drivakos also mentioned that there are rumblings this might not be an accident. Some witnesses have said they saw a man in the woods waiting for the moose on the other side of the highway wearing a Moosehead t-shirt. There are theories that the moose was a professional and was hired by Moosehead Breweries to stop the delivery truck from reaching its destination.

Thunder Bay is a part of the Canada that hasn’t changed in over 70 years. They have two types of beer, Labat 50 and Molson Export and they are still served in the stubby bottles. Brewers see Thunder Bay as an untapped goldmine and figure the first to get there will win the beer race. Grolsch had enough beer on that truck to get every man, woman, and child drunk for weeks. Now they will have to go back to Holland and brew another batch before attempting another dangerous trek to Thunder Bay.

If anyone has any information regarding the whereabouts of a moose that fits this description

Please call the Thunder Bay Police Department immediately.

Story Telling Sunday – Alone in the Woods

Thanks for your comments last week.  Here’s the continuation from The Bear and The Man.  Remember to leave comments this week to let me know what Reggie should do.

Reggie decides the farther away from that bear the better.  He’ll take his chances one night in the woods.  Besides what’s the chance of running into another bear on the same day.  Reggie takes his time paddling across the lake to get to the opposite end.  He navigates up a small stream and carefully brings his canoe ashore making sure not to drag it over any large rocks.  Immediately Reggie searched for some sort of shelter or material for a shelter and wood for a fire. Using the rope he had in the canoe Reggie was able to construct a makeshift shelter with small logs and tree branches.  It wasn’t great, but it should give him some protection from the elements.

It was the beginning of fall, many of the trees had turned colour and started dropping their leaves.  The dried leaves would be perfect for catching an ember when Reggie tried to start a fire.  Reggie dug out a little pit with his bailing bucket, crumbled up a bunch of dried leaves and rigged up a wood spinning tool that would create enough friction between two pieces of wood to create a fire.  It took him a while, but Reggie was able to do it and in no time he had a fire big enough to keep him warm for the night.

Reggie made one last sweep of the area looking for any tracks or signs of bears in the area.  Content that there weren’t any he laid down under his shelter by the fire and rested his head on a life jacket.  Reggie was very hungry, but that was the least of his concerns knowing that he had to make it through the rest of tonight and then head back to the cottage to see if the bear was gone.  Reggie closed his eyes and fell asleep.

It felt like he had been asleep for hours, but it was still dark and Reggie was woken by the sound of shotguns being fired and men yelling.  Reggie rubbed his eyes and cleared his head.  What could these guys be hunting?  The bear hunt was canceled a couple of years ago and there is no hunting for deer in this area.  He peered around one of the makeshift walls of the shelter to see beams of light coming through the bushes.  The men were definitely moving in his direction, but were still far off.  Reggie could hear something quickly moving through the bushes and coming right at him.  He figured it was the animal the men were hunting.  It came bolting through the bushes right in front of Reggie and shouted “RUN!”  The animal was a man!  The fleeing stranger said no more and headed straight for the lake.

Reggie was frozen; he didn’t know what to do.

Should Reggie:

  1. Run, like the man said.
  2. Call out to the hunters to identify himself

Proline Week 3 NFL Football Picks and Odds

So last week was a bit of a crazy week. Carson Palmer throws 6 touchdowns for Cincinnati and still loses to the Browns! Needless to say my record isn’t that great right now at 2-4, but this week things should be better.

For week 3 of the NFL I am picking:

Minnesota Vikings to win by 3pts. This is going to be a very close game between the Vikings and Kansas City Chiefs. Neither team is very good and both are prone to the turnover. I’m going to say the winner of this game will win by 3pts or less which constitutes a tie in Proline. Odds 2.90

Carolina Panthers to win by 4pts. Jake Delhomme has been great for Carolina and Steve Smith just keeps on catching touch downs. The Panthers should win this one over the Atlanta Falcons pretty easily. Odds 1.60

New York Giants to win by 4pts. Eli Manning is still playing and that gives the Giants an edge over the Washington Redskins. If the Giants can control Clinton Portis they should be able to win this one. Odds 3.00

Dallas Cowboys to win by 4pts. The Tony Romo – Terrell Owens connection keeps rolling for the Cowboys. The Chicago Bears have got a terrific defense and if Rex Grossman has any success the Cowboys are in tough, but I think they will pull this one out. Odds 2.50

New York Jets to win by 4pts. The Jets are facing the Miami Dolphins who flat out stink. With Chad Pennington back for the Jets they will have a win in week 3. Odds 1.90

Detroit Lions to win by 4pts. The Lions are 2-0 on the season and I don’t see why the Philadelphia Eagles should get in their way. Donovan McNabb has not had a good start to the season and now that he is being dogged about his slightly racial comments I think he will be distracted. I’ll take the Lions to go 3-0 on this one. Odds 3.00

This week is definitely a week of underdog picks for me, however if it all pans out right and I put down $2 on this ticket the payout will be. $2 x (2.9×1.6x3x2.5×1.9×3) = $396.72

Heelys and Rollerblades

Rollerblades are a fantastic way to get some exercise, be outdoors, and have fun. You can go just about anywhere the pavement will take you and you’ll be surprised how easy and quick it is to get around. 123skate.com is a fantastic site based in Miami Florida that offers a huge selection of Rollerblades and Heelys.

Heelys and Rollerblades

Heelys are probably the best product ever invented for kids since Transformers. I wish I was still young enough to wear a pair of Heelys. It probably wouldn’t look to good if I was to glide past the CEO’s office at work. Again 123skate.com has a great selection of Heelys to choose from and they ship all over the US and Canada.

If you are looking to get outside this weekend, have some fun, do some sightseeing, or just wheel around the neighbourhood then check out 123skate.com for some great deals on Heelys and Rollerblades.

Funny Adsense Ad On Everyday Weekender

Wow.. I just laughed my ass off. I was looking at my site today and noticed a google adsense ad that had me rolling on the floor.

The adsense ad appeared on my Story Telling Sunday – The Bear and the Man post. I know google is supposed to be great a picking appropriate ads for your content, but this was a little too wierd.

If you’re lucky you might still see the ad there. If it’s not there anymore, I took a screen cap of it.

Here it is:

Hilarious Google Adsense Ad

Too funny… at least that’s what I thought 🙂

Story Telling Sunday – The Bear and The Man

I’ve been asked a number of times “so what happens to the man and the bear?” but there weren’t any comments left so I will choose the direction of the story this time. If you are interested in the story leave a comment with your vote as to how it should continue. Now back to the man and the bear.

Reggie knew that playing dead was for fools and that if he was going to die it wouldn’t be by pretending to already be dead. He decided to make a run for it! The water wasn’t that far away and he figured if he could just make it to the lake the bear would lose interest and go back for the honey. Reggie bolted for the doc finding a path that he figured would be tough for the bear to follow, but to his surprise the bear was right behind him. Reggie could hear the pounding footsteps of the bear on the leaf covered ground. The heavy breathing and somewhat snarling sounds of the bear seemed to be right in Reggie’s ears. Reggie was waiting for the inevitable hit that would send him flying and rip open his back. But there it was…the dock! The sound of Reggie’s shoes hitting the pressure treated would was like the sound of hitting a homerun to Reggie. He took two steps and then dove head first into the water. Then silence. There was no more growling sounds, no more heavy breathing, but the fear had not left Reggie. He waited under the water to hear the deep giant plunge of the bear coming after him in the water, but there was nothing. Reggie swam a little farther out into the lake before coming to the surface. When he did come up for air he could see the bear had turned around and headed back to the cottage for some unguarded food just as Reggie had hoped for.

Reggie figured it wouldn’t be safe to go back to land, but he should be able to untie his canoe from the dock and get away from there for a while. He did just that and then realized that he had no food, no water, and not even a Swedish Firesteel flint stick to start a fire. The sun was going down already and Reggie was far from anywhere. He wondered if it was best to try and sneak back to his Jeep and find help in town or just camp out the night on the other side of the lake. He didn’t really feel safe being out in the open over night given that he knew bears were on the prowl for food, but how could he know if the bear was really gone when he comes back to the cottage tomorrow. Reggie sat in his canoe wondering what to do.

What should Reggie do?

  1. Go back to the cottage for the Jeep
  2. Stay out in the woods all night unprotected

How Fast Can You Pitch?

Here’s a great product if you are a trash talking smart mouth or if you are a serious coach trying to help your student, sports radar guns! As a kid the only time I was able to find out how fast my fast ball was, was if I went to a carnival. Even at that I didn’t believe them…65MPH my ass! Actually my best pitch was my slider, that’s until my elbow blew up like a balloon. Kids, never throw junk until you are finished growing! But I digress.

The Speeedtrac radar gun is a handless radar tracking device that can be setup on any camera tripod. The large LCD display will provide instant feedback to the student and the coach. It’s a great way to encourage your young athlete. If you are looking more high tech, maybe to improve you golf game, you might want to consider the Adastra 2000.

Designed specifically for indoor cages it provides a large heads up display and is fourth generation of radar speed measurement systems. All radar guns and systems are made in the United States with free shipping and a manufacturer’s full warrantee included. If it’s speed you’re after you can’t miss with these speed guns!

Proline Week 2 NFL Football Picks and Odds

In Canada the government wanted a piece of the action when it came to sports betting. So it started a nation sports book offering odds, spreads, and over under cards. I’ve been in a number of spread pools in the past and have hung in there never to win a week and finish just out of the money spots. So now I’m moving to Proline odds. They require you to pick a ticket of 3 to 6 games and you must correctly guess the outcome of each of the games on your ticket.

For week 2 of the NFL I am picking:

Indianapolis Colts to win by 4pts. I don’t think it is a stretch of the imagination to believe that the Colts offence, lead by Payton Manning, could beat Tennessee by 4pts. Odds 1.40

Cincinnati Bengals to win by 4pts. With Carson Palmer and Ocho Cinqo on offence 4pts should be no problem. Odds 1.40

Green Bay Packers to win by 4pts. Favre is getting old and the receiving corp is very young, but Eli is out for a month and Brandon Jacobs has a torn MCL. Packers all the way. Odds 2.30

Dallas Cowboys to win by 4pts. Tony Romo had a great start to the season leading all players in fantasy points. Look for the Boys to continue that offence against the Dolphins who will struggle all year for wins. Odds 1.70

Denver Broncos to win by 4pts. Jay Cutler had some scary moments in week 1, but he should be over his season starting jitters. Denver will beat an inconsistent Oakland. Odds 1.25

Seattle Seahawks to win by 4pts. Hassleback and Alexander once again looked very good in the first game of the season and will only get better. Arizona has some young talent, but won’t be able to overcome the seasoned veterans of Seattle. Odds 1.90
